Bowel Disease

IBS, Crohn’s, colitis, diarrhea, constipation, and other bowel conditions

You are not alone…

Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome affect more than 20 million people in the United States. All three diseases create significant discomfort and impair normal lifestyle. Crohn’s disease and colitis also cause damage to the digestive tract that can be dangerous and irreversible

Conventional medicine has its place…

Conventional medicines can be lifesaving in emergency situations and can control symptoms for many people. Unfortunately, they do not address the underlying cause of the symptoms. In addition, some medicines have serious side effects that make their use undesirable.

You do have options…

Many people do not realize there are options in addition to conventional medicine that will actually make them better. By addressing the underlying causes of bowel disease, patients experience reductions in symptoms, improvements in overall health, and reduced dependence on medications.

There is hope…

For years, the doctors at Asheville Natural Health & Homeopathy have been helping people recover from bowel disease. Call today to schedule an appointment. We use safe, effective natural therapies that are individualized for you. Get started on the road to recovery and reclaim your health!

What do you do for patients with bowel disease?

Crohn’s, colitis and IBS are caused by an imbalance in one or more systems in the body. In IBS, the digestive and nervous systems are out of balance. In Crohn’s and colitis, the immune system is out of balance.

At Asheville Natural Health & Homeopathy, we restore balance to these systems using classical homeopathy, customized therapeutic diets, nutritional supplements, and mindfulness-based stress reduction.

Each patient’s plan is individualized – we have never found a “one size fits all” approach to be useful for the majority of people.  We spend two hours with an adult patient on the first visit to make sure we understand very thoroughly what is going on in your body. We also spend time in follow up visits to make sure that healing is progressing as well as possible.

Homeopathy:

Homeopathy is part of the name of our practice because we believe so strongly in its power to cure disease. Homeopathic care involves the thorough evaluation of each patient’s exact symptoms. A single remedy is chosen that matches the subtleties of each case of disease. The remedy given restores balance to the many systems of the body that keep us well. [Read more about homeopathy.]

Diet:

There are different therapeutic dietary approaches that we will employ depending on each patient’s symptoms, sensitivities, lifestyle, and response to previous treatments.  There is ample evidence in the conventional medical literature supporting therapeutic diets for bowel disease. We comb that literature to add to our knowledge of the relationship between diet and disease.

Supplements:

Depending on your exact condition, we may recommend one or more nutritional supplements. These will help to reduce inflammation, restore balanced function to the digestive tract, replace or promote the growth of healthy bacteria that are supposed to be plentiful in the digestive tract, and speed healing of damaged tissue.  We only use supplements that have strong support in the medical literature.

Mindfulness-based stress reduction:

Research supports the use of mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) techniques in reducing stress that has a negative impact on digestive health. MBSR involves simple exercises such as concentrating on one’s breathing to train the brain to remain calm during stress.

What about my medications?

Conventional medicines can be lifesaving in emergency situations and can control symptoms in many people. Unfortunately, they do not address the underlying cause of the symptoms. In addition, some medicines have serious side effects that make their use undesirable.

At Asheville Natural Health & Homeopathy, our programs improve your health on a fundamental level. Healthy bodies don’t need medications. Our goal is always to reduce or eliminate the need for medications, and we are generally successful.

Please don’t ever discontinue a medication without the consent of your physician, as that could be dangerous or uncomfortable.

IBS, constipation and diarrhea can improve very quickly, or they can take several visits to get under control.  Crohn’s disease and colitis typically require six to twelve visits.  These visits may be weekly or bi-weekly at first, becoming less frequent as your health improves. Follow up visits will last 30 – 45 minutes, as they involve coaching and counseling as well as homeopathy.

Supplements may be required at an additional cost. We try to keep supplements to a minimum, but our patients may spend $25 or more per month on supplements.

Ongoing follow up care may be required to maintain results.
